Does listening to music during cardio boost your performance?

Listening to music while exercising will be very nice for most, but does it actually improve your performance?

Several studies have been conducted in this area. Several studies, including one by P.T. Cutrufello and colleagues[1], found that listening to music improves performance in anaerobic exercise and strength training.

However, this is not very relevant for cardio; during cardio you mainly use the aerobic energy system. There is less research in the field of aerobic exercising that shows an effect.

However, there is research that indicates that music can also improve cardio performance. In a study[2] by P.C. Terry and colleagues, they collected many articles related to the relationship between music and exercising. They have merged the results of these articles into a new article. It emerges from this article that various factors brought about by listening to music can lead to an improvement in performance during aerobic exercising such as cardio. These include, for example, a less likely feeling of exhaustion and better physiological efficiency.

In short; it seems that music can also improve performance during a cardio session.

A playlist to motivate yourself during cardio

The playlist below is a personal favorite of mine, I often play it at the gym. The playlist can be listened to via Spotify.

The playlist consists of motivational speeches by different people. This list will really push you to your limits. I would definitely recommend this playlist, especially if you really want to go all out!

Is it safe to wear earphones/headphones during cardio?

Yes! Wearing earphones/headphones is safe. There are a few things to keep in mind though. First of all, make sure you have earphones/headphones that fit well to your head; that is, they are not too loose. It is very annoying if your earphones fall out or if your headphones keep sliding over your head.

In addition, it is highly recommended to purchase wireless earphones/headphones. Wires can get in the way during cardio. Do you currently have wired earphones/headphones? If you carry your phone in your pocket, make sure you let the wire run under your shirt, then it is less in the way.

Where can you put your phone during cardio?

If you’re doing cardio in the gym, I’d simply put your phone on the treadmill/crosstrainer/bike, generally there will be a place for this. This way you have as little trouble with your phone as possible.

If you are cycling or running outside, there are 2 options. The first is that you simply put your phone in your pocket. In general, you will experience inconvenience from this. It is important to make sure that you are wearing pants that are tight, otherwise your phone will shake continuously.

The other option is to purchase a holder that you can place around your upper arm. I would personally recommend this. In this way you will hardly experience any inconvenience from your phone.
